Pacquiao vs Mayweather Fight Update

Seven-division champ and Sarangani Congressman-elect Manny Pacquiao has agreed to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s demand that he undergo a blood test 14 days before the fight, clearing an obstacle to talks for their much-awaited bout.

“Pumayag naman ako pero hindi yung talagang maraming dugo na kukunin. Kung anong dugo ang kelangan sa drug test, ganoon lang karami. Fourteen days [before the fight],” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo..

The reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion said he softened his stand after listening to boxing fans’ clamor for a mega fight between him and Mayweather.

“Everywhere I go… gusto talaga nila ng Mayweather fight. [They ask me] over and over,” said Pacquiao.

Pacquiao made the decision to fight the former pound-for-pound king weeks after he received permission from his mother, Dionisia Pacquiao, for one last bout.

The blood test controversy was the reason the negotiations between the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps collapsed early this year.

The two would have fought last March 13, but Mayweather ended up fighting Shane Mosley and Pacquiao battling Ghana's Joshua Clottey.

Pacquiao’s camp earlier agreed to undergo tests 24 days before the fight, but Mayweather’s group insisted that blood should be taken 14 days prior to the fight.

Drug test real reason?

The Filipino champ said he’d like to find out whether the drug test is really the reason why Mayweather backed out from the negotiations early this year.

“Para wala na siyang masabi at hindi na maraming dahilan pa. Tignan ko kung ‘yan talaga ang dahilan,” said Pacquiao.

He said he earlier frowned on Mayweather’s demands, arguing that fighters should not meddle with boxing commission rules.

“Boxer naman ako eh, kung ako lang, ba't ko pa pakikialaman ang trabaho ng mga commission ‘di ba? Kaya nga tayo may commission kasi sila nang bahala sa mga rules,” said Pacquiao.

Following Pacquiao's decision, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is expected to negotiate with Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Mayweather’s fights.

18 days before in Floyd-Shane fight

Blood test as the drug protocol is the personal requirement for Mayweather. Athletic commissions require urine tests on boxers as the form of drug testing, and Pacquiao has never had a problem

Arum said he learned the last day for blood testing used by Mayweather and "Sugar" Shane Mosley in their recent fight was 18 days prior to the fight.

"The USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) stopped the blood test... they took 5 or 6 tests but the last one was 18 days for Mosley and 19 days for Mayweather," he told Castillejo in a phone interview.

Tiger Woods has an ideal tee time for his return to golf at the Masters — at least as far as TV is concerned.

After weeks of speculation about his playing partners for the opening two rounds at Augusta National, the starting times released Tuesday had more to do with "when" than "who."

Woods is to tee off at 10:42 a.m. (PDT), Thursday in the penultimate group. Barring any delays, his group likely will be on about the eighth hole when ESPN's live coverage begins at 1 p.m.

The Masters will let ESPN show Woods' first tee shot live, but after that his play will be relegated to the several-minutes-long cut-ins "SportsCenter" will show throughout the day until 1 p.m.

Woods hasn't competed since a shocking sex scandal began to unfold the day after Thanksgiving.

The so-called experts can't seem to get together on what to expect from Woods in his first tournament, the Masters, after nearly five months of being tabloid fodder. Some have said that he could be a contender and perhaps even win, while others are of the opinion that he might not even make the cut in his first event since winning the Australian Masters in his last outing in November.

Last year, after missing eight months following knee surgery, he was knocked out of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship by Tim Clark in the second round. Then he tied for ninth in his first stroke-play event, the WGC-CA Championship, before winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational his next time out. Twice, Woods has gone nine weeks without competing before showing up at a major championship.

In 2006, he tied for third in the Masters and did play again until the U.S. Open at Winged Foot because of the death of his father, and he missed the cut in a major for the first time in his pro career. Two years ago, Woods had a preliminary surgery on his right knee after finishing second at Augusta and returned to win his 14th major title by outlasting Rocco Mediate in an epic 19-hole playoff in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Only Ben Hogan, in 1951 and 1953, has made the Masters his first tournament of the year and won it. In addition to owning four Green Jackets, he has 10 top-10 finishes in 15 appearances at Augusta National, including four in a row since his last victory in 2005.

Shane Mosley, the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight super champion, said his May 1 fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will surely be a showdown unlike the one-sided fight of Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey last Saturday.

“I would like to congratulate Manny on his victory Saturday night even though I think it put most of the fans watching to sleep,” Mosley said in a 411mania article posted by Ramon Aranda.

Pacquiao successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt against Clottey via unanimous decision last Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mosley, who will face Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, even declared that he will score a knockout against his opponent.

"Now it's time for the world to focus on May 1 when I promise you nobody will be sleeping except for Floyd after I knock him out and send him back into retirement," added Mosley.

Clearly there are a lot of factors at work in this match-up pairing two of boxing’s best. So how will it all play out? As most could imagine, Shane Mosley will gain the upper hand as the fight begins. It will be a combination of Mayweather’s usual tortoise-like opening stanzas, Mosley’s eagerness to shake off the rust and Mosley’s likely game plan to get into Mayweather’s space, be the aggressor and throw lots of punches.

With Mosley winning three of the first four rounds, the crowd will be eagerly cheering for Sugar, awaiting yet another glorious moment in his long career. From there, Mayweather will begin adjusting his tactics and opening up his offensive arsenal. He won’t be able to hurt Mosley, and everyone in the arena knows it… so he won’t try to do that.

This is a fighter that kept things safe against lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez instead of opening up and ending the fight when it seemed as if it would have been exceedingly simple to do so. One of his main offensive weapons will actually be his ring generalship and his slowing of the pace. By always keeping Mosley at the wrong range, taking half steps back and forward, creating angles and striking at unexpected times, Mayweather will limit Mosley’s output, begin landing counter shots and straight rights and start putting some rounds in the bank.

By round eight with perhaps an even fight on our hands, Mosley will turn up the heat and the aggression. This is where the fight could swing in either direction. Either Mosley’s aggression paves the way for him to land a crushing blow or surge enough to win the final rounds, or the increased activity for Mosley will allow more ample opportunities for Mayweather to do what he does best, pick his shots, make the other guy miss on the inside and leave the ring relatively unscathed.
